The Palace Museum ,also known as the Forbidden City or Purple Forbidden City, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the feudal society, emperors had supreme power,so this residence was certainly a forbidden place.Purple was the symbolic color of the North Star, which was believed to be the center of the cosmos.
It is located in the centre of Beijing and rectangular in shape,960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from east to west. The Forbidden City is enclosed by a moat 52 meters wide and a city wall ten meters high.At each corner of the wall is a magnificent watch-tower.
The Greatwall was a gigantic defensive project and its construction first began in the seventh century BC.During the Warring States Period, the rival kingdoms of central and northern China built walls around their territories for self-protection.The main kingdoms were Qi,Chu,Yan,Han,Zhao,Wei and Qin.The high walls and fortresses constructed by three kingdoms of Qin,Zhao and Yan as a defense project against the nomadic tribes.Massive contractions of the Greatwallwere concentrated in the Qin,Han and Ming dynasties.Mutianyu Pass was built in 1404.The unique features of this section are the “double sides battlements” and “branch walls”.Another unique feature is that this area has dense woods and rich pastures with beautiful landscape all year round.
